NATO Command Structure

The Alliance has had a regional approach for its command structure: north and south of the Alps in Europe, and east and west of the Atlantic; over the past years the Alliance has adopted a functional military command structure. Consequently, the Allied Command Operations (ACO) organization has operational responsibilities at the strategic level and Allied Command Transformation (ACT) at Norfolk in the United States takes responsibility for promoting and overseeing the continuing transformation of Alliance forces and capabilities.
