NATO Generals meet at Ramstein Headquarters for biannual conference

RAMSTEIN, Germany - On May 11 and 12, Headquarters Allied Air Command hosted the biannual conference of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). Generals and Commanders from all European NATO Commands and Headquarters were summoned to Ramstein by SACEUR General Curtis M. Scaparrotti. The meeting served to discuss current NATO deterrence and defence issues as well as for General Scaparrotti to state strategic directions and guidance to his Commanders.

"Across Allied Command Operations, in coordination with our Allies and Partners, we must ensure our forces are ready and postured to deter adversaries, support allies, assist partners, and counter trans-national threats. All the time remaining relevant and ready to respond to a complex security environment," said General Scaparrotti. "We do this by enabling our forces through multinational exercises and deployments across air, land, maritime and cyber domains."

A main focus of the conference was NATO’s enhanced forward presence mission, under which member nations currently have Land force detachments deployed to Poland and the Baltics, deterring Russian aggression. Further discussed were subjects as countering terrorism as well as exercises and training of NATO Forces.

The SACEUR’s conference is a forum held biannually at which all European NATO Commanders are provided the opportunity to coordinate and synchronize their ways ahead. It is chaired by SACEUR, yet hosted at different Headquarters every time. The conference on May 11 and 12 was the first time the meeting was hosted by the Allied Air Command at Ramstein.

"We were thrilled to host SACEUR's Commanders' Conference here at Ramstein," said General Tod D. Wolters, Commander Allied Air Command, adding "The team stepped up and executed a flawless two-day event".  Gen Wolters also highlighted the open communications across the conference, "specifically the participation of our Senior Enlisted Leaders and their tireless contributions to the NATO Alliance."
