Allied Air Command to oversee Air Power contribution to exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE 18

Oct 18, 2018

RAMSTEIN, Germany – From October 25 to November 7, 2018, the NATO exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE 18 will take place in Norway, the surrounding areas of the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea, including Iceland and the airspace of Finland and Sweden. Allied Air Command will contribute to achieving the goal of testing and showcasing the Alliance’s collective defence capabilities.

With more than 45,000 participants from 31 nations, this exercise is a prime example of NATO Allies and partners working together in peacetime as well as in a crisis. Air, land, maritime, special operations forces and amphibious forces will be deployed to the exercise area operating 150 aircraft, 70 ships and more than 10,000 vehicles. The biggest NATO live exercise in years is conducted under the responsibility of Admiral James G. Foggo III, Commander of NATO Joint Force Command Naples. Allied Air Command provides an Air Component Command Exercise Control Headquarters at Ramstein for the air domain and controls air forces via a daily training Air Tasking Order.

The training for participating air units is facilitated via pre-scripted flying operations including Composite Air Operations and joint air portions. This training programme has been developed based on the air units’ requirements, capabilities and training objectives. The main exercise objective is to train and exercise tactical units of the NATO Response Force 2019.

The Air Exercise Director, Brigadier General Karsten Stoye, Allied Air Command Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, steers all air aspects of organic and joint exercise play at Ramstein. Air Detachments in Norway, Finland and Sweden constitute the forward elements of Allied Air Command; their task is to cooperate with the Host Nations and coordinate on-site upcoming challenges with the air units regarding execution of the flying training programme.

After the live exercise, the joint certification of Allied Air Command in its role as the Air Component Command for the NATO Response Force 2019 will take place during the TRIDENT JUNCTURE 18 Command Post Exercise/Computer Assisted Exercise from November 14 to 23. This part of TRIDENT JUNCTURE 18 aims to further increase the ability of the NATO Command Structure and the NATO Force Structure to integrate with national forces in NATO territory and demonstrate the Alliance’s ability to conduct joint operations and to operate with Partners.
