Secretary General visits designated NATO facility at Torrejon bunker

TORREJON, Spain - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Spain on Thursday, Jan.25 2018.  His itinerary included a visit to Torrejon Air Base, home of NATO’s southern Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC).

Accompanied by the Defence Minister of Spain, Ms. Maria Dolores de Cospedal, he visited the bunker facility at Torrejon Air Base, of which a designated part is soon going to be used by the CAOC’s personnel.  Lieutenant General Ruben Servert, Commander of the CAOC, briefed Secretary Stoltenberg on the progress of the project during a tour of the facility.

The implementation program of the bunker, whose infrastructure has been achieved in 2006, is still ongoing and its final operational capacity is linked to the implementation of the new NATO Air Command and Control System (ACCS).  In the near future, the CAOC’s operational assets will move to this underground facility and share it with the Spanish Air Force Control and Reporting Center.
