The United States Air Force Bomber Task Force mission was joined by Romanian F-16 and Canadian CF-18 fighter jets. This gave a real demonstration of the Alliance’s transatlantic link underlining US and Canadian engagement for security in the region.

The mission also gave Allied Air Forces the opportunity to improve interoperability and enhance capabilities while demonstrating NATO’s resolve to protect its interests in the Black Sea Region. This was amplified by General Jeffrey L. Harrigian, Commander of Allied Air Command, “These type of sorties demonstrate NATO’s preparedness to act decisively across the geographical breadth of the Alliance in defence of its territory. The Allied aircrews and operations centre staff gain immeasurable experience when executing this type of multinational operation, giving them a battle winning edge against any potential adversary”.

The mission was co-ordinated by Allied Air Command, Ramstein in conjunction with Combined Air Operations Centre Torrejón. These types of mission highlight the integration and interoperability between NATO Air Command and Control and the Allied Air Forces.

Brigadier General Andrew Hansen, Deputy Chief of Staff Operations Allied Air Command added, “These opportunities strengthen our capability to operate more effectively and demonstrate our ability to respond to threats, ensuring stability and security in a region of strategic importance for the Alliance”.

The US Bomber Task Force have been based out of RAF Fairford, UK for the past few weeks from where they have conducted theater integration and flight training across Europe and Africa. The strategic bomber missions provide opportunities for U.S. integration with NATO allies and regional partners.
