NATO enhances Integrated Air and Missile Defence through tri-hosted exercise

RAMSTEIN, Germany – NATO's Senior Military Leaders and Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) experts conducted a tri-hosted IAMD Table Top Exercise (TTX) at STRIKFORNATO's headquarters in Oeiras, Portugal, 27-28 Apr, 22.

Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) in conjunction with Allied Air Command (AIRCOM) and Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) conducted the IAMD TTX to address present and future real-world IAMD challenges, while educating Alliance senior leaders. STRIKFORNATO's Deputy Commander, Rear Admiral James Morley welcomed exercise participants from 16 Allied nations for the exercise.

Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it is of the utmost importance that our leaders routinely get together to explore scenarios that the alliance could potentially face in the near future, to ensure that we are best prepared to defend NATO Nations against military threats within our region.

Rear Admiral Morley said: "The IAMD TTX was an excellent opportunity for senior leadership throughout the NATO Alliance to discuss the complexities of the evolving IAMD threat in Europe. Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it is of the utmost importance that our leaders routinely get together to explore scenarios that the alliance could potentially face in the near future, to ensure that we are best prepared to defend NATO Nations against military threats within our region."

During the two-day exercise, the participants focused on measures to deter, nullify or reduce any air and missile threats and discussed the standing NATO Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) mission.  Additionally, considering new challenges or threats that may arise in NATO European territory is particularly important in the changing European security environment following Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine.

"This TTX is a key opportunity bringing together senior joint leaders to compare our notes on NATO's integrated and collective tactics, techniques and procedures", said Lieutenant General Pascal Delerce, AIRCOM Deputy Commander. "NATO's IAMD is an essential multi-domain element of our deterrence and defence, which contributes to the Alliance's indivisible security and freedom of action," he added

NATO's AIRCOM, the single service command for all Alliance air and space matters delivers Air and Space Power for the Alliance on the European continent. Headquartered in Ramstein, Germany, AIRCOM provides Command and Control of NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defence mission and hosts the Alliance's Ballistic Missile Defence Operations Centre.
